Tactical numbers and markings

Stu.Pz.Abt.216 Tactical Numbers

I have been trying to figure out if it's possible is to tell from the tactical numbers which company a vehicle belongs to. For example could tactical numbers 1-18 be first company, 19-36 second company and 37-54 third company? In Russia we see a lot of high number but in Italy less so. I does seem that some of the first vehicles to arrive in Italy start with the lower numbers, we see 1,2,3 and so on in what appears to be the Anzio area. Company command vehicles seem to be numbered the same as the standard vehicles, as #1 is a Befehls Sturmpanzer, the Stab vehicles seem to keep the Roman numerals but there is only one example of a late using them so not much to go on. Company ID aside the Sturmpanzers of Stu.Pz.Abt.216 in Italy all seem to be more or less consistently marked, in other words it does not seem that there was any variation that could be associated to a particular company.

Here is what I have determined from photos of Stu.Pz.Abt.216 in Italy. The marking in Italy where about the same as seen in Russia and seem to have been more consistently applied in the early part of their deployment to Italy, this makes sense and they probably had more time. The balken kreuz seems to have been applied at the factory since it can be seen on what appear to be new vehicles with no camouflage or tactical numbers. There is one on each of the sides of the superstructure a little above and back from the center. There is another balken kreuz on the back of the superstructure on the welded extension that sticks out the back, it is facing backwards and seems to be about center. The tactical numbers where place on each side of the superstructure, top back corner, and on the top right hand side of the back of the superstructure just below the antenna, although this is seen less frequently. It also seems the numbers were not consistently applied on both sides. The numbers are all solid numerals in white although it did not seem uncommon for some Sturmpanzer not to have any tactical numbers applied.

Initially it seems that tactical #1 is going to tow #3 as they are connecting the cable. The Munitionsträger can be seen in the background.
This image clearly shows the the position of the Balken Kreuz and the tactical number on the side of the superstructure.  It also shows the tactical number on the upper right hand side of the back of the superstructure.

Now the Munitionsträger is connected to #3 an is apparently the tow vehicle,
tactical #2 (in front) is a series 2 (early mid).  Vehicle behind #3 is either a series 1 rebuilt or a series 2. With the close proximity of #2 to the
Munitionsträger I wonder
if it was also helping with the tow.
Tactical #2 in this image show that tactical numbers and crosses could be found on
both sides of the vechicle.

Back on the move with a photo that appears to have been take from #3, note
the front vehicle is #2 and the Munitionsträger is behind it with the crew
looking back (
presumably at #3 ).

This shot shows tactical #3 as can be distinguished by the camo pattern on the left side.

Tactical #3 finally at the repair facility. Tactical numbers can be seen on both sides
of the vehicles, the front two being on the right side and the back two
(possibly #51 and #14) on the left.

A bit difficult to see but you can just make out the tactical number 14 on the right.

This is another picture of tactical #1 seen in the first image, here we can see it is a Befehlstrumpanzer. This is what I presume to be a company command vehicle.

I guess this would be a Battalion Stab vehicle with a tactical number "I" as we have
seen with Stu.Pz.Abt.216 in Russia.  You can just make out an extra antenna above the tactical number.  This is the only example that I am aware of a
Sturmpanzer in Italy that shows a Roman numeral tactical number.
