Sturmpanzer production began in April 1943 and ended on February 1945, a total of 306 units were produced. The first 3 versions of the Sturmpanzer were produced at the Heereszeugamt Wien, this was the army depot in Vienna. The last version (series 4 or late) was produced at Werk Stahlindustrie in Duisberg.

The earlier Sturmpanzer where build on reconditioned Pz.Kpfw.IV chassis but the later ones were build using new chassis. The chassis were pulled out of the regular Pz.Kpfw.IV assembly line at Nibelungenwerk in St. Valentin so Sturmpanzer chassis would have all the same characteristics of the standard Pz.Kpfw.IV.
